No to me, because I liked her diary (I actually like reading anybody’s diary), but this Salon article about Amazon.com users giving classic books 1-star reviews cracked me up. I will take a gander myself later on and find some other examples.
Grrr
by NicoleI have been getting a lot of book recommendations lately from book review sites like Dear Author and author discussions on Twitter. I’d been buying all of my ebooks through Barnes and Noble, but I know that B&N isn’t always the cheapest when it comes to print books, so I was curious as to whether this would also be the case with ebooks. Several people mentioned the website Fictionwise, which is actually owned by Barnes and Noble, but is still a separate site. After looking around and finding enough books that I liked to justify it, I went ahead and created an account there. A large part of the reason that I joined Fictionwise was the attractiveness of their loyalty club, Buywise (Google cache link), which cost $30 a year, and took 15% off of all of their ebooks. I figured that with my book-buying habit, over the course of a year I could save at least that $30 through the program.
So why did I find out today, a mere 6 days after I joined this club, that it had been discontinued? It’s not only closed to new sign-ups, which would suck but be understandable, but it’s also over immediately (that “all existing members may continue to use their benefits” thing is disingenuous, since my 15% discount no longer appears anywhere next to ebooks I might want to buy). That means that people who paid their money, and believed that Fictionwise would honor the terms of its loyalty program, no longer get the discount that they paid for. This sucks. I already wrote Fictionwise a letter using their incredibly unhelpful help form, and I hope that they will give me the refund that I requested.
Humbug.
Update: The 15% off discount still remains (glad I was wrong about that part!) but I’m still waiting to hear back from Fictionwise about bulk order discounts for club members.

Book Ratings Booksellers ebooks Not awesome
Things I didn’t know
by NicoleI’d never heard of March Madness-type book tournaments until I caught wind of DABWAHA (voting starts today – squee!). It was a total revelation to me. I don’t know why this revelation didn’t prompt me to see if there were others, though, because there totally are. Just think of all of the geeky brackets I could have been making all these years!!!

Pretty awesome news for libraries
by NicoleThere’s a lot to be afraid of these days in the world of libraries, and cuts are happening all over. That’s why I was happy to some good library-related new for a change.
- First (there’s enough for a list, even!) Overdrive is going to offer libraries the ability to lend patrons ebooks without DRM on an honor system basis. Sounds promising.
- Also jumping on the DRM-free bandwagon is Sony, which will allow libraries to offer patrons up to 20 free (for the patron, not the library) song downloads monthly. Partnering with Library Ideas LLC, Sony will present Freegal Music Service, which will allow patrons access to hundreds of thousands of songs in the Sony catalog. Could be huge.
- I just found out about this Traveling Harry Potter Exhibition. I tried, but couldn’t get into the books myself, but I love to see people enjoy books and reading, so I find this pretty exciting. It doesn’t come to New Jersey until May, and I’ll have to remember to put it my library’s Twitter feed then so that those who might be interested will know about it. (itinerary)

Awesome Book Ratings Libraries Technology Things I like
Second chance!
by NicoleI was bummed that I missed out on participating in DABWAHA last week. I had no internet at home during most of the bracket sign-up, and didn’t know about the competition (and damn that horrible storm for knocking out my Internet and making me too busy at work to browse my favorite sites). Bummer! I felt a little better because during my voting, I saw books I was certain would advance just go…nowhere. I guess this is how March Madness fans feel when their brackets are destroyed by the equivalent of “Smooth Talking Stranger,” when they felt sure that “Lead Me On” was going to be victorious. So I would have been done in the first round, anyway.
So I’m really happy to see that the cool people at DABWAHA are offering a second chance competition (entries accepted through March 24, 2010). The prizes aren’t as impressive (as if this matters to me; I just love to enter contests), but I’m just excited that I’ll have the chance to be a part of things BEFORE voting. I’m filling out my bracket now. I have no great hope of success, since I haven’t read most of the books up in this round, but this will be fun anyway!
